I’d like to start by telling you about myself and how my husband and I ended up here. I’m originally from Holyoke, Massachusetts, but have also lived in Connecticut, Florida and Las Vegas, Nevada, prior to moving to Chapala. My husband Joe and I have been married since 1970. We have six sons, four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and are also godparents to two children from the Love in Action orphanage in Chapala.
We have lived here since May of 2007. We had visited before and loved the lake, the weather and the activities available to the English-speaking community.
Both the ex-pat and the Mexican communities made us feel welcome and the extremely low cost of living was but icing on the cake! There is an abundance of American and Canadian goods, excellent medical care, gyms, spas, banks, brokerages, theaters, restaurants, and other services and organizations that we hadn’t expected. These include multiplex cinemas, numerous clubs, cultural and charitable groups, even 12-step meetings, all in English. Living here is like being on a continual vacation, extremely peaceful and relaxing.
We were surprised when we moved here to find much less poverty than we anticipated. The standard of living is higher than I expected for the Mexicans as well as the expatriates. The Mexican people cannot do enough for you. By and large, they are very honest and I am impressed at the level of care they give their families and senior citizens. The ex-pats are well organized and we have community theater, music and just about everything else available in the United States and Canada – and at half the price or better. The balnearios (hot springs) are heavenly!
I am a “baby boomer” with all the same fears, problems, challenges and expectations that we all face as we get older. Having had medical problems, I was concerned about the quality and availability of medical care in the area. I can assure you it is excellent and reasonably priced. I can also explain the Mexican medical care system, and how to arrange treatment and medication from other countries if desired.
Excellent growth is widely predicted for the area, with increasing availability of North American-type restaurants, services and activities. Property values in Mexico, which has one of the world’s most stable economies, should soar once the world financial scene settles down.
I have been assisting buyers and sellers in the real estate field since 1974. I was No. 2 in my company, and among the top 10% in Las Vegas. I hold both the CRS (Certified Residential Specialist) and GRI (Graduate of the Real Estate Institute) designations. Less than 4% of all realtors in the United States hold the CRS designation. I am also a member of the Lake Chapala realtors’ group, GIL, which is affiliated with the National Association of Realtors (NAR) and the MLS of Mexico. I just recently began working with Coldwell Banker in Chapala, but worked for them in Tampa, Florida, in the 1970’s.
What I enjoy most about being a realtor is helping you find a home that fills your needs, as well as most of your desires, at a price you wish to pay, whatever your budget may be! I am primarily a buyers’ agent and work very hard at negotiating not only price but amenities and repairs (if needed) as well. Location, quality of construction, neighborhood, proximity to supermarkets and restaurants, medical facilities, recreational facilities, and financing are all important concerns I will help you with.
Follow-up after the sale is very important also, particularly when you are moving to a new area. I am always available, both before and after the sale, to both buyers and sellers. I don’t pretend to know all the answers, but if I don’t, I promise I will find them for you.
